(An Extreme) Food for Thought

Posted by Joann Lee in Untagged

Joann Lee
FROM THIS MORNING'S "MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST" (http://rbc.org/utmost/index.php)
...The true character of the loveliness that speaks for God is always unnoticed by the one possessing that quality. Conscious influence is prideful and unchristian. If I wonder if I am being of any use to God, I instantly lose the beauty and the freshness of the touch of the Lord. "He who believes in Me . . . out of his heart will flow rivers of living water" ( John 7:38 ). And if I examine the outflow, I lose the touch of the Lord.

Who are the people who have influenced us most? Certainly not the ones who thought they did, but those who did not have even the slightest idea that they were influencing us. In the Christian life, godly influence is never conscious of itself. If we are conscious of our influence, it ceases to have the genuine loveliness which is characteristic of the touch of Jesus. We always know when Jesus is at work because He produces in the commonplace something that is inspiring.... -Oswald Chambers

Why do "They Like Jesus but Not the Church"?

Posted by Joann Lee in Untagged

Joann Lee

I've been engrossed in a radical, mind-boggling, world-rocking, thought-provoking book by a man named Dan Kimble called They Like Jesus But Not the Church. Before I go into what the book has done for me though, let me share with you who I was before reading the book.

I was the girl who went to church every Sunday. I would befriend non-Christians with the agenda of "saving them and bringing them to Jesus."  I strayed far, far away from the party scene and if there were any alcoholic beverages near my presence, I felt like there was an "evil spirit" surrounding me. "Be a kingdom influencer, and save the world for Jesus" was my motto.

After opening the first page of They Like Jesus but Not the Church, negative emotions that I've never felt before surged through my veins as I read the thoughts and feelings of some non-Christians and how they viewed the church to be "legalistic, homophobic or male-dominated."  As I read one quote after another, I found myself thinking, "Gosh, you stupid people...stop complaining and just go find another church that will meet your needs." Harsh, I know. But how would you have felt if someone knocked the beliefs you grew up and so whole-heartedly believed in?

But after opening the first page of They Like Jesus but Not the Church, many pathways for interesting conversations opened up  as well.  I began asking friends who've almost stepped away from Christianity, "What was it that caused you to want to step away?"

One of them answered, "I hated the system." Another one answered, "I wasn't getting the answers to the questions I was asking."

Lessons learned in Ecuador

Posted by Paul Kwak in Untagged

Paul Kwak

This Ecuador trip for me was personally the best mission trip because it was the longest and most rewarding.  I feel God used each of us mightily in our own gifts and talents.  The majority of the work went to the 5 day VBS that we lead.  We were expecting only about 60 children, but praise God because He sent over 200!  That allowed us to be a little underprepared, but I learned how great it is to be underprepared sometimes because it allows us to truly depend on God for His power, strength, and will to be done in us.  Another thing I learned during this VBS was how much I now truly appreciate quiet time; the time to think and meditate on God.  Just to be still and know that He is God.  Admist all the work we were doing in Ecuador, there wasn't much time to think and be still; only during the morning prayer time would we have a lot of time and in this prayer time, I learned how to speak to God more intimately.  I have definitely taken back here to the United States more discipline to get to know God more intimately and also to use a lot more of time with Him.

I also learned how beautiful God is through His people in Ecuador.  The Ecuadorians are hard-working, loving, patient people.  Puts the American people to shame in my opinion.  Just another reminder with so much we have here, how ungrateful we are.  I was reminded from Pastor Kim in Ecuador that we should give thanks in all that we do because that is His will(1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).  The children there are so happy with so little they have.  I always think how great it would be for people to come to the States, but one of our teammates said that they would be happier in Ecuador.  I thought about it and just how true that would be.  We don't need materials or that much money to live a comfortable life.  All they have and need is God and a tight-knit family.  I would love to have just those things in my life, but God has placed an entirely different destiny in my hands.  I would still love to go back and learn more from these people and to evangelize more and spread the Gospel there.  The entire country's Christian population is only .5%  I think God will use this generation of Ecuadorian children to be the salt and light of Ecuador.  I want to be a part of that!

One more thing I want to share is truly a great experience I had at the open market.  So I've been exploring acting this past year and it is growing on me and becoming more fun.  "Becoming" a character is quite an adrenaline rush and a whole new experience.  Since I'm such an amateur, I've only experienced "becoming" a few times.  But during one of our skits, I "became" Jesus and it haunted me the rest of that day.  Why? Because I experienced the suffering and persecution.  I got a taste of it.  The amazing thing is that I only got a small taste.  A fraction of a fraction of what Jesus went through for us.  His death and suffering must have been so unbearable!!!  For me!! For all of us!  The tears during the performance was so real.  The pain became real.  It was an unbelievable experience that I'll never forget.

Song for love

Posted by Sue in Untagged

Sue

Another insert from 2001 reflections...

At dawns first light I wake
At dawn I rise to see a clearer you
To feel an inch closer to you
to serve you with all of me

In the moments that are hidden
Whispered in the shadows of time
You will always be there when I seek you
Lord be true Lord be mine

Chorus
Can it be that a wretched man be pardoned
Can it be that a guilty man be free
By your grace and by your mercy
Through your life and death you saved me
Can it be that I am worthy
If only I could see you in me
In every moment in my life you found me
And loved me all the same
can it be

And by the grace on which I hope
Have always traced back to you
Through every history and behind each thought you see
Am I worthy of this love
Am I this precious,
could this love be free,
How can it be a reality
In every moment I reach out to you
You hear me .....can it be

Reflections pt. 100

Posted by Sue in Untagged

Sue

i came across this reflection in one of my journals from 2001.

thought i'd share with you today.

Let me show you the way to heaven
Help you follow a path to Him
Cuz i know that in life you'd be lost without hope
without life, Without Him
Take a hold of your life take a hold of your eyes
The world you see and feel is not true
The pain you feel now may crumble your world
know that his strength is perfect
Know that He will carry you

In the midst of anguish and despair, when the hopeful dreams all die
and the world is not meant to go on living
A beacon of light will pierce through the dark
and you'll hear a voice calling you by name

My child have you forgotten
Why I came from above to meet you again
I know and feel the hurt you carry inside
I have come to claim it as mine

To show you forever I love you still
To show you a life free from hurt
my scars to prove we will never be apart...
See the holes in my hands
and the holes in my feet
the scar on my head and side
All are here to remind you again
I didnt die for a worthless cause,
I died to give you life.

A Study On True Forgiveness

Posted by Yealee Song in Untagged

Yealee Song

Forgiveness.

A simple concept but so hard to do.   I thought I understood what it meant, but I didn't really.  I have no problem forgiving people for small hurts, offenses and slights.  But I had an experience in which two close friends hurt me very deeply... and the forgiveness that I had to extend was a long, slow and painful process.

As a Christian, I knew I had to forgive.  But while I forgave in my head, it was difficult to forgive in my heart.

I went through different phases.  First there was the "I'll forgive them but I'll never forget" phase.  Then the "I'll forgive them, but God, you know what they did wrong.  You be my avenger" phase.  Neither is true forgiveness.

In the course of my readings, I came across a book by Bob Sorge called, Dealing with the Rejection and Praise of Man.

If you have been called to summit the mountain of Entertainment and Media, KAC Media would like to invite you to be an important part of this ground-breaking event at Harvest Rock Church (HRC) and the Ambassador Auditorium.  Because there are many conferences and ministries dedicated to the equipping of Christians for impact in Hollywood - HRC truly sought out the Lord's wisdom in how to approach this endeavor without duplicating or overshadowing the efforts of those ministries ahead of them. Their desire is to stretch the scope of impact not only for Hollywood, but for the whole Mountain of Entertainment. proJECT Light will draw attendance from Pastors, leaders and industry professionals around the world including Asia and East India's Bollywood. A diverse showing of the Arts will be represented through industry professionals  who have already worked the trenches in Film, Television, Music/Worship, Dance, Broadway, Comedy, and The Fine Arts. Furthermore, attendees who have a heart for this Mountain will be equipped through the spiritual guidance and impartation of world renowned Pastors and Leaders who have carried a special burden for the industry throughout many years.

If you have a burning desire to use the talents and giftings God gave you for Hollywood, you should not miss this opportunity to sit under spiritual mentors who have paved the way. You were not chosen by just name but by your authenticity to the Great Commission, so take action.  Because this is the first Arts and Film conference of its kind at Harvest Rock Church, spread the word not only to believers for the industry, but anyone who might have a heart to sow into this unique ministry.  Please visit the site at http://harvestrockchurch.org/revival_alliance_conference_2009.php for more information.           “This is something that I believe has never quite been done before in the Christian community, and will be a groundbreaking event,” Gabe Ahn said. ProJECT Light grew out of Harvest Rock Church’s goals to transform society through various areas of culture – religion, media, arts and entertainment, family, government, education, business.

“We believe that Harvest Rock Church, like many, have a mandate to reach out to the entertainment industry because we are located at Ambassador Auditorium inPasadena, so close to Hollywood, and that Ambassador hosted performances by the world’s top entertainers for 20 years,” Ahn said.

“If we were to talk about Christians in Hollywood 20 years ago, we would have been looked down upon, but now we’ve seen the reverse, the opposite attitude,” he continued. “We as believers should not separate ourselves from Hollywood. It needs us, and that's why we want to encourage people to be a light in the entertainment industry.”

When this conference’s topic was selected, church leaders formed a committee of parishioners who worked in the media, arts and entertainment industries.
