Summer is ending and
students around the nation are going back to school. For students, it feels as
if summer has barely started. There
are so many more things
out there we have yet to enjoy;
summer retreats and hangouts seem as if they occurred ages ago. As dreadful as homework, lectures, and more homework
sound- they are inevitable.
What we need to do is be
ready to tackle the school year with God in mind.
Academics:
As Christians, we need to
remember to rely on God when it comes to success. Students with good grades
often develop pride, crediting their success to their intelligence and efforts.
Yes, they have a right to be proud of themselves, but not to the point that
they begin belittling others, convinced that their success had nothing to do
with God and everything to do with them. King Solomon was considered as the
wisest man in the world. But the Bible clearly states that God granted him
wisdom, success and grandeur in his kingdom. As students, we need to approach
our academic life with a humble heart, asking God for not only intelligence,
but wisdom, and praising him when we do.
Social Life:
Every year, new friendships
are developed. As God's children, when we befriend others, we need to pay
attention to our motives. The school party animal? Are you befriending him
because you like him as a person, or are you doing so so that you'll gain
exclusive access to the hottest parties? In school, peer pressure is
unavoidable- no one has control over that. However, to a certain extent, you do
have control to who will pressure you.
Ministry:
Moreover, you have control
to who you will pressure. Apostle Paul tells us, ""Do not let
anyone treat you as if you are unimportant because you are young. Instead, be
an example to the believers with your words, your actions, your love, your
faith, and your pure life" (1 Timothy 4:12). You don't have to talk about
God and Christianity to everyone you meet, but in school, you can preach the
truth by simply being an ambassador for Christ.
School is consuming, no
doubt about it. At moments, it's all we think and dream about. But at times, we
need to simply step back, remember God, and thank Him for all He has done for
us.
