Remember when hangman and connect-the-dots were new tricks to try with friends
or even on your solemn time? Simply, it was enjoyable trying to mettle with the
death of a hanging figure or connecting away to find an irrelevant picture in
the end. Either way, you experienced "something new" and at five years
young, you felt the pursuit of fun.
Of course, if you're in college and studying to be someone extraordinary, these
childish games feel far-fetched from your sophisticated lifestyle. Well, society
never said you couldn't enjoy the "simpler things in life." Instead
of being profound all the time, take a breather. For lack of a better word, stop
being a stickler with how you must spend your time, all the time.
In hopes of finding a simple circuit to your incredibly fast-paced direction,
take a moment and sink in what you think will keep you from crashing. There
are options to heed, growing to do, and breaths to take before overloading yourself.
Many of us are crying for an outlet. The book of Job deals with the idea of
stress and what later becomes "the churning inside [of us]
that never stops; days of suffering [that will] confront [us]." (Job
30:27). Understand that healing ultimately comes from the Lord himself because
"all man's efforts are for his mouth, yet his appetite is never
satisfied." (Ecclesiastical. 6:7)
No one condemns you from having too much to do, but if inside you are running
from activity to activity to make peace, consider involving your busy life unto
the Lord's heart. You will find that his "yoke is easy and his
burden is light." (Matthew. 11:28-30)
Now, take a moment to capture the following images of a leisurely weekend
and make sure to check the box that is applicable to you.
*A brain teaser, Sudoku, challenges even the greatest minds in solving a numerical
puzzle
* Pull out a simple recipe, but one you find delectable such as carrot cake,
baked Mac and Cheese, or even cookies. HINT: You will be immersed with a little
bit of chaos the first five minutes, but will feel accomplished when you pop
it out of the oven. Plus, make plenty to offer and time to spare.
* Scrabble with friends or Poker with buddies. Either way, wager on something
small, but well-spent since good sportsmanship is teamwork after all.
* Grey's Anatomy Night, Heroes: Save the Night, The Office Party, or whatever
is equivalent. It's fun to root for your favorite characters weekly.
* Daily Devotionals feed the heart.
* Check out vintage stores on Melrose Avenue. You will have an experience of
cheap thrills even if they come used. You will come to terms that America consumes
and tosses.
* Go to a used bookstore. You may come around a priceless moment: finding your
first bedtime story.
* Go to a concert, school play, musical, art gallery, or live band mixer. You'll
have more to talk about and remember versus a weekend box office.
* Friday night Bible Study
* Morning hikes with friends.
* Optional: ________________
These aren't defining points. Rather, quick ways to recharge, restore, renew,
and lastly rest. These are simply ideas that you can do without stressing about
what will define you. Along the way, you might even find that you do enjoy the
little breaks God gives us to finally rest.
