together. 10 years old?!
Yes, today people as young
as 10 or in
some cases even younger have begun dating. This phenomenon has grown
with the increase of media. Quite honestly, I can understand why
these premature relationships occur and with the same honesty- it's
kind of frightening. I call it "The Princess Effect."
Any girl exposed to the Disney Princesses can testify to the power of
Princess Effect. Normal girls are swept off their feet by the
handsome prince. Along with the princess status comes happiness-
shown by the various gowns and jewerly bestowed by the girls.
Girls beg their moms to buy
their
favorite princess costume for Halloween. Jewerly and cheap makeup
accompany this girlish fetish. There's just one thing missing- the
handsome prince. Guys are then transformed in the eyes
of girls. No longer are they slobbish, mud eating pigs with cooties.
They are potential princes and they remain potential princes forever.
"I charge you, O
daughters of
Jerusalem, that you stir not up, nor awake my love, until he please."
(Songs of Solomon 8:4)
Too late.
Dating, what was once
idealized as
something reserved for teenagers plus has packaged itself in the form
of Disney stories. The concept that love equals happiness has
trickled down to even the youngest members of society. This equation
is tempting- even for a child.
With every effect, there is
a cause-
and that cause is modern entertainment. Everyone loves a good love
story. Compare the box office sales for Titanic and any action movie
and tell me I'm wrong. Love stories sell and this Princess effect
just goes to show the impact of the media. A guy suits up, and
proposes in front of a hundred people with flowers and a beautiful
ring. I assure you, at that moment, all the girls around will melt
and a simutaneous "Aww" from the females of the crowd will sound.
Why? The proposal is strinkingly parallel to its Hollywood
conterparts. No one at that moment pities the bride and groom for the
months of toil that goes into wedding planning because everyone
assumes that after proposal, there is a happily ever after..
It's the Princess Effect.

Easier said than
done-seriously.
