Tim Be Told On November 20, the up and coming band Tim Be Told took the stage at East Gate Korean Presbyterian Church as a part of their on going Acoustic Tour. While the venue boasted an intimate setting, the music performed was anything but and we would have had it no other way!
Pastor Joshua Kim Despite the unusual chilly Los Angeles weather, the concert opened up on a warm note, literally. As the doors opened at 7 p.m., concert attendees began to slowly trickle into the toasty sanctuary while a few members of BASIC (Bodies And Spirits In Christ) strummed jazzy tunes on their guitars, prepping the audience’s ears for what was to come. And as the crowds of mostly high school and college students settled down, EGKPC’s Pastor Joshua opened up with a word of thanks to all attendees and sponsors for their support and kicked off the evening with a prayer. BASIC Opening for the main act, five ordinary college-aged boys climbed up on stage and sat with their respective instruments. Musically, BASIC is composed of three guitarists, one electric and the others acoustic; a bassist; and a drummer. And while the name suggests a simplistic sound, they surprised the audience with their musical skills, both instrumentally and vocally. Reminiscent of The David Crowder Band mixed with accents of country and rock, these five musicians performed three songs that they composed. Talk about talent! Tim Ouyang Following BASIC and a quick intermission, Tim Ouyang and Andrew Chae of Tim Be Told took their spots in front of the piano and guitar, respectively, and dove right on into their music. Right from the start, we knew that it would be a show like no other as the two had the audience captivated by the first few measures of their song “Analyze”, almost as if the attendees were in a trance. And if anyone in the audience wasn’t fully captivated by the end of their first song, their second song, “System”, undoubtedly caught everyone’s attention with a Maroon 5 meets jazz sound. Tim Be Told In addition to those two songs, Tim Be Told also performed “Dirty Shoes” which had all the ahjummahs smiling and clapping along and “Collision” which was written by Tim in high school as well as several songs off their latest album Humanity. They also treated the audience to a mashed up cover of Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror” and Bon Jovi’s “Save the World.” Andrew Chae Closing the set, they performed “Reach for the Light,” encouraging audience participation in the song. However, before fully leaving the stage, they were beckoned back as the audience requested an encore performance to which they responded by playing “Gravity’s Hold.” And in closure to the whole event, BASIC and Tim Be Told teamed up for praise as the audience worshipped along.
