With over 500 churches around the world, including 36 churches in South Korea, True Jesus
Church is a non-denominational church set up by the Holy Spirit in Beijing
in 1917. There is approximately 1.5 to 2.5 million believers.
True Jesus Church believes that it is the revival of the
Pentecostal church. The church was set up through Paul Wei (1877-1919) in China.
Paul Wei was originally a member of the Apostolic Faith Mission Church.
One day while praying at a church in Beijing,
the Holy Spirit came down onto him and he began experiencing glossolalia. By
the guidance of the Holy Spirit, he was led to a large river where he then
knelt down and prayed. A clear and loud voice told him, "You are to be baptized
facing downwards." Paul obeyed and felt as if his soul was cleansed. After
fasting for 39 days, the Holy Spirit told him to form a new church named "True
Jesus Church." It is called the 'True Church'
because the doctrines were created by God- and not by man. The doctrines are
consistent with those of the apostolic times. True Jesus Church aims to correct
all doctrinal mistakes that have been made by other church denominations. Some
doctrinal practices of True Jesus Church include Saturday Sabbath worship,
praying in tongues, foot-washing, baptizing in bodies of living water, and the
rejection of the concept of trinity.
In Southern California, there is one Korean branch located in
the city of El Monte. It is a
small church with a congregation of about 30. What sets this church apart from
the multitudes of Korean churches across Southern California is its unique service.
True Jesus Church services are held on Saturday instead of Sunday. Moreover,
instead of praying in understanding like most churches, the prayer mirrors of
that in Act 2. "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak
in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them" (Acts 2:4).
The presence of miracles and signs is another distinguishing
factor. From resurrection of three people in recent years in the African
branch, to something as simple as miracle healings- True Jesus Church is able
to justify its legitimacy through these miracles.
