San Antonio Independent Christian Film (SAICF), a project of Vision Forum Ministries has announced its largest cash prize of $101,000 for the winner of the “Best of Film Festival” feature film. Since its original prize amount had been ten times less, the news release surprised many. While the deadline for the submission of a feature film is November 1st, 2008, the winner is planned on being announced in January 2009.
Doug Phillips, the founder of the SAICF, made the public announcement at the National Religious Broadcasters Convention in Nashville and wants to “show that there is hope outside of Hollywood by rewarding culture changers who are recapturing film for God’s glory.”
Philips’ remarks come during a time when Christian films appear to be on an up rise. “Facing the Giants”, a Christian indy film produced by a local church in Albany, Georgia utilized a $100,000 budget and managed to draw in over $10 million at the box office. Director and Actor, Alex Kendrick, a member of Sherwood Baptist Church had a volunteer cast and has written two other films to date.
Seeing that the majority of today’s freethinking and liberal filmmakers have inundated their content with non-Christian values, Phillips desires to see an upgrade and “reformation” in Christian filmmaking and wants to support those in pursuit of this mission.
There will also be prizes in other categories beside feature film – including Documentary, Dramatic Short Film, Special Category, Promotional Media, and Commercial Advertisement. The total amount of prizes is over $200,000 and anyone may submit an entry and even submit multiple entries. For more details on the submission requirements, go to www.independentchristianfilms.com.
