For many, Street Fighter is a childhood favorite
arcade-game. The sheer joy of beating the other opponent with combinations of
Right and left arrow pushed together with the punch button always rewarded the
players with the coveted “AHHHDOOOGEN”. Many had expectations of a reboot of
the Street Fight film, could it
possibly be better than Jean Claude Van Demme as Guile while he fought the late
Robert Julia in an electrifying (pun-intended) battle? Sadly, the expectations
should be very low for the reboot.
The simple plot of
the film is your average revenge plot. Chun Li (Kristin Kreuk, looking lean and
mean as ever) as a young girl longed to become a world famous pianist, as it
was her father’s wish. However, because her father had many connections , right
and wrong, he gets taken away from her by Bison (Desperate Housewives fame, Neal
McDonough). Many years pass, Chun Li
is now a grown woman, still trying to cope with the loss of her father. Through
fortunate events, she finds out that her father is still living, under a
watchful eye of Bison. She journeys through streets of Bangkok to get her
revenge. Oh and Chris Klein plays hands-down, one of the most ridiculous “Dirty
Harry” impersonating Interpol Agent, Charlie Nash.
The film boasts one of the prettiest Happa (Half White & Half Asian)
actresses to grace the screen at the moment, Kristin Kreuk as the
protagonist/titular character. Sadly, she isn’t given much to do but to look as
fierce she can be, while looking breathtakingly beautiful. Moon Bloodgood
(another Happa) plays Charlie Nash’s love interest. She also isn’t given much to
do but just to look sexy as well. The real star of this film is, as funny as it
sounds, is Charlie Nash. He chews up the screen (pun-intended) with his
snarling smiles and intense eye-stares. Some of his ridiculous quotes generate
laughter as well such as “I love this job”, as he checks Moon Bloodgood. Surprisingly,
there is an element of Christianity in this crap of film, which is Bison’s
everlasting battle, whether to keep his last ounce of goodness or not. He
finally chooses to be free of goodness and that’s when he is punished for his
evil deeds. The question remains if Bison chose to keep his goodness, (SPOILER
alert) would Chun-Li have had spared his life?
Safe to say, the film borders around its MPAA rating pretty safely. There isn’t
any obscene nudity or graphic violence. The action sequences are done to its
Wire-Fu glory. However, there are some implied languages (thanks to the great
Charlie Nash) so parents should be aware.
Ultimately the film is what it is. If you were expecting Oscar-worthy
direction or performances, check out Slumdog
Millionaire or the upcoming Inglorious
Basterds instead. As Chris Klein signed off, KAC out!
