Avoiding the Freshman 15 - Part 2 of 3 |
So what can we do about all of this? Here are a few pointers:
1. Choose your food wisely- If you have a big appetite like myself,
fill up on vegetables first. I used to start off with a big salad
everyday for my meals in the cafeteria. And don’t get tempted to eat
everything in sight in the cafeteria (I know it can be hard). After
your salad, choose 1 main entrée, perhaps a sandwich or chicken and
rice. Try to stay away from red meat dishes and also heavily fattening
foods such as lasagna, pizza, fettuccini etc. Personally, grilled
chicken and fish are the way to go. And yes.. beans and legumes are
very good for you as well.
2. Portion control – Everyone’s BMI (Body Mass Index) is different.
Get yours measured and find out what your daily caloric intake should
be, and don’t surpass it.
3. Spread out your meals- Ideally, you should be eating little by
little throughout the whole day. I know that it’s difficult to do,
especially if you have meal plans in the dorms. Still, you can eat a
well portioned meal in the cafeteria, then bring a piece of fruit out
for a snack later. And regarding snacks, try to stay away from the
Doritos and Snickers bars. Pretzels are a good and healthy snack, and
so is fruit. I personally love fruit and eat a lot of it as snacks.
There are also other healthy and tasty snacks out there. Trader Joe’s
has a lot. : )
4. Try keeping a food journal- You’ll be amazed to see on paper what
you’ve eaten. Hopefully that can inspire you to make the right
adjustments.
