Being healthy is actually hard to accomplish these days. Humans have become
rather sedentary and are barely willing to walk to a store a couple of
blocks away. Fast food restaurants litter practically every block and
our diets are literally loaded with fat and sugar. Physical health is
important to our bodies- but spiritual health is equally, if not more
necessary in our lives. Learn how to be healthy in both aspects.
Exercise:
*Physical: Instead of watching TV, walk around your neighborhood.
Plug in your ipod and listen to music and for once, enjoy "nature"
[or what is left of it]. Go to the gym once a week and set up a weekly exercise
schedule. Most importantly- move around. Simply pacing back and forth while
talking on the phone will eventually add up.
* Spiritual: Engage in a one year bible reading plan. Read
three chapters per day and finish the entire bible within a year. Make the determination
to pray everyday for at least fifteen minutes. If this is too difficult to hold
yourself accountable for, have a friend call you once in a while to remind you
of your commitment to God. Only through spiritual exercise can we maintain a
healthy relationship with God.
Eating healthy:
* Physical: Cut down on calories. This does not necessary
mean raiding the grocery store and memorizing the nutrition facts. It means
making wise decisions when it comes to food. Instead of having your afternoon
Coke, drink water. Instead of that slice of pizza, go to Subway. Eating wrong
can mean high cholesterol or diabetes, problems no one wants to run into.
* Spiritual: Try to cut down on worldly media. Some forms
of media can be detrimental to our spiritual lives and can indirectly influence
the way we view life. Sad, love songs have been shown to affect listeners in
that listeners are more susceptible to depression and broken hearts. Instead,
try digesting Christian music, texts, and even shows. No longer will we be ruled
by depressing, emo ballads- instead, Christ will be the center of our lives.
Healthy lifestyles are key to living a fruitful and happy life. People today
have become rather obsessed with physical health- investing hundreds of dollars
in gym membership and a personal trainer. What people fail to realize is the
importance of spiritual health- that although being physically healthy is important,
the physical life only lasts for so long. Thus, as Christians we need to strive
for both- only then can we positively improve our lives.
