Mia Kim is a Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter with roots in Philadelphia. Her sound is a fusion of quiet strength and personality with presence. While this new sound is still very much simple and sweet, sustained notes and growl keep the music alive with energy.
Stylistically, one can compare Mia to a modern-day, female-lead, 1990s alternative rock band. It’s that raw and free-flowing, concentrated groove that keeps listening ears on her lyrics and musicality.
Mia demonstrates her ability to be relatable. While faith pays a major role in her life, her lyrics of personal experiences and thus a different outlook on life give all listeners new insight into the world. As a result, Mia finds herself on music charts and in distribution nationwide and internationally, from the United States to South Korea to the UK.
Currently, Mia has an album titled, “Rumour of Flight,” which can be purchased through iTunes. Her second album, “Who is Sukey Rose?” uses a collaboration of fans donating money and inspiration to help raise support until the completion of it. This album is said to be released in spring of 2009.
1. Name: Mia Kim
MUSIC
2. Genre of music: Indie/pop rock/singer/songwriter
- 2a. Sounds like: um, this is a particularly hard question... I've had people say so many things from Jewel (I sound nothing like her except we both play the guitar) to Ani Difranco, to Lisa Loeb (?). What do you think?
3. Who influences your style of music? My favorite artists of course! Death Cab for Cutie, Tegan and Sara, Mute Math, Imogen Heap
4. What is your songwriting process like? The music comes first. Usually I'll just sit in front of the piano or with my guitar and start strumming/playing. I'll come up with an interesting chord progression and then start singing and the song tumbles out. After that, it's a matter of listening to the feel of the music, refining the lyrics and shaping the song structure into final form.
5. Where do you get your inspiration? life experience, news events, and nature
6. How does your faith tie in with your music? Some are called to write worship, some are called to write from a Christian perspective for a Christian audience and some are called to write for the culture at large. I'm definitely in that last category in that I write about truthful experiences that everyone can relate to, believers or not. My faith is interwoven into the very experience of song-writing and the essence of who I am and so you can definitely sense that in my lyrics. I write all my songs very prayerfully. I also believe that if I reach for excellence in the execution of my music, I've exercised my gifts in a way that is worshipful and pleasing to my Creator. But I leave it up to God to use my songs as He sees fit. Therefore, my mission as a song-writer is simply to create truthful music and meaningful lyrics that people from all walks of life can relate to.
7. Songs on repeat in your music player? The very addicting song "Again and Again" by Bird and the Bee, "Minor Keys' by Starflyer 59 and the whole album "Dial M" by Starflyer 59.
