Sarah Kim is another female artist whose emotions hit hard and steady to the beat of her guitar. She is serious about her music, but insists not to take her as too serious about herself. As seen on her YouTube videos, her songs speak of relationships that make deep impressions on her heart, yet she always manages to bring about her playful self into these presentations.
Viewers got their introduction to Sarah Kim through another famous YouTuber, David Choi. With his song “That Girl,” Sarah created her own rendition titled, “That Guy.” Receiving over a hundred thousand views, Sarah Kim’s popularity jumpstarted to a higher degree. Beginning with covers, Sarah’s own version of hit songs gave listeners an idea of how much better some songs could sound even when done in one’s own bathroom with just a voice and a guitar.
Sarah Kim is a Maryland-based student and songwriter that draws inspiration anywhere from life experience to the very own relationship she has with Christ. Despite her location, she has managed to make connections with other artists on the Tube all the way across the nation such as Seriously and some other YouTube favorites. Sarah has even participated in LiNK’s Liberty Live Tour alongside artists such as Andy Grammar and another east coast-based group Miss Vintage (watch out for Jason Min’s Q&A in the weeks to come!).
Currently, Sarah is working on her EP in the studio. In the mean time, check out one of Sarah’s YouTube videos posted below and scroll down after the Q&A for links to her websites!
3. Who influences your style of music?
I would have to say the person who influences my music the most is John Mayer. Only because he’s such an amazing guitarist! I want to be as good as him. Also, Christina Aguilera, Shane and Shane and Neyo!(Awesome song-writer)
4. What is your songwriting process like?
When I am writing original songs, I just wear my heart on my sleeve and try to be as honest as possible. Maybe even a little too honest at times. hehe Lyrics come the easiest to me and the melodies are a little more difficult. I don’t like to write songs when there is clutter around me. I like everything to be clean. lol.
5. Where do you get your inspiration?
Most of my inspiration comes from my own personal experiences. I also get very inspired when I see other musicians play songs that I love! I get inspiration at the most random(and inconvenient) times like when I’m driving or at work. Sometimes, if I don’t have my notebook on me, I will save lyrics that I think of in my “draft” folder of my text messages.
6. How does your faith tie in with your music?
Faith is so so important in my music. It is easy for people, especially musicians to get caught up in themselves- it’s all about their voice, their music and their dreams. But nothing we have is from ourselves but a gift from God. Apart from God, I have nothing and am nothing. I know that if I am not rooted in God or in His word, I would lose myself trying to please society and the music industry. God deserves all the praise for anything that I have. =)
7. Songs on repeat in your music player?
[Sober] Pink
Miss Vintage’s album (Really, I’m obsessed!)
[We Won’t Relent] Jesus Culture
[Your Biggest Fan] Never Say Never

10. Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
Well, I am 21 now. So that means I will be 31. *tear* I have a lot of crazy goals. As a musician, hopefully I will have come out with at least three solid albums and played some really awesome shows. As a Christian, hopefully I will be chasing after God even harder and have never strayed away. Also, I hope to have lots of puppies by then! lol.
