Q&A with Seriously

ImageSeriously is a band you want to know and the band that you probably already know. They’re the seemingly honest backyard band whose music you take seriously, hence the name. The reality of it, however, is that they take themselves seriously and maintain their integrity as musicians, but they’re not your average garage band. They’re that band that rocks smoothly and swoons their listeners with easy beats and steady melody. To put it plainly, they’re soulful with a hard edge.

The band’s fans keep Seriously at an ongoing pace, as the band continues to update their songs and covers on their YouTube page, fulfilling both what they want to put out and what their fans want to hear. It’s as if they’re one’s good friends. It’s not hard to love this band and get sucked into their music when they make themselves so accessible to their listeners and viewers. Moreover, it is their music alone that captures wandering ears to be fixed onto their sound.

The band, consisting of four members (Christopher Pham, Philip Park, Joshua Baek, and Nathan Park) have played at a wide range of venues—from café nights to support missions to sold-out concerts like Kollaboration in 2006, winning the grand prize with their song “Irony.” The band’s efforts to put themselves out there have gained them positive feedback and a growing fan base. They are signed under Chaos Theory Music label and have already toured in April of 2008. They have also participated in promoting human rights in North Korea under the organization, LINK, alongside other artists such as FarEast Movement and Lyricks.

Seriously, once again, is not your typical friend’s band.

1. Name: Seriously

MUSIC
2. Genre of music: Alternative/Pop/Rock

  • 2a. Sounds like: Rock, pure awesome

3. Who influences your style of music? Coldplay, U2, John Mayer, Foo Fighters

4. What is your songwriting process like?
Everybody writes, but typically if something is on our hearts or minds we really try to transcribe that into lyrics that also develop into melodies as well.

5. Where do you get your inspiration?
Always searching for where God’s voice seems to call. We may find inspiration in taking greater risks, or not even taking risks, from paintings, to even a blank ceiling. God has provided all of the materials we need to become inspired. Love, poverty, politics, the world is full of many beautiful things.

Our inspiration comes from all the experiences that God allows us to go through.

6. How does your faith tie in with your music?
The act of creating music is a form of our worship to God.

Our faith ties into our music by the way we are human. For a while, we were so concentrated on sticking to a pop formula but we realize it is God that provides the platform so therefore it is more important for us to withhold integrity within our music and really make music to how it feels good to us. Not to say that we are self-centered song writers and that we write to please our audience. I believe God can be most glorified as He puts these questions within our souls that it may come out musically and really touch the hearts of our listeners.

7. Songs on repeat in your music player:
[The Scientist] [In My Place] Coldplay
[Move Along] Seriously
[God of this City] Chris Tomlin
[City of Blinding Lights] U2

GROUP PERSONAL
8. Favorites

  • Thing(s) to do together: Basketball, eat, nap, Smash Brothers
  • Place to practice:  Santa Monica studio, Nathan’s house
  • Moment during rehearsal/performance: Nathan almost killed Chris/ Josh stepped on his tuner pedal that muted his sound/ Philip forgot his cymbals, when Josh’s pants ripped

9. How did you guys decide to come together as a band? We formed the band to enter and play at an Asian-American talent show called Kollaboration.

10. Where do you see yourself 10 years from now? Hopefully still honest and withholding integrity within ourselves and our music.
