This past Sunday, December 7, Sarai Koo and her board of directors for MAPS 4 College hosted a “Kick-Off” Reception at the Doubletree Hotel in Anaheim. The event was held to inform those in attendance of the goals of their non-profit organization which aims to help students “succeed in school, college and life.” Being a non-profit organization, they were seeking donations for the launch of a new program.
Sarai Koo, founder and CEO began the evening by outlining the goals of MAPS 4 College. Their mission is to help pre-college students succeed in life by academic and spiritual enrichment programs. She explained the SPICES program in particular which is designed to develop the Spiritual, Physical, Interpersonal, Cognitive, Emotional and Social awareness aspects of their lives.
Board member, Dr. George Taylor gave a presentation boasting recent statistics that showed the increase in minorities attending colleges and universities. He also made it a point to highlight the importance of higher education. His mother was a school teacher and instilled within him the promises of an educated life. Dr. Taylor could not help but express his love of the institute of education by recounting his entrance into grade school at age five until his departure from university just ten years ago. It it this unending passion for education that has led him to MAPS 4 College.
At the beginning of the evening, a video presentation showed students endorsing MAPS 4 College through their testimonies. One girl in particular, a freshmen in high school, described how she was counseled and led to a solid relationship with God. She learned that without placing Christ first, her scholastic achievements would be meaningless.
For second generation Korean Americans, our culture would like to make us think that the only thing that matters in life is your measurement of success. Income and reputation are the bars by which our value is weighed. In order to achieve success we need to be admitted to a prestigious university and to ensure that, we are sent to hagwon. What is refreshing about MAPS 4 College is that it is not a simple hagwon that trains you for the rat race. By providing spiritual counselors, MAPS 4 College makes sure their students are headed to success, not by the measurements of the world but by that which is eternal.
