The Bresee Foundation
Overview
The Bresee Foundation is a nonprofit community center that is a source of faith, hope and service to low-income youth, adults and families in central Los Angeles. We serve nearly 2,000 individuals annually, primarily at-risk youth from the Mid-Wilshire, Koreatown, Pico Union, and Westlake neighborhoods (90004, 90020, 90057). Most residents live below poverty level and have no access to health care. Gang mayhem and juvenile violent crime are rampant, and over 50% of students are not expected to graduate high school.
Bresee works hand-in-hand with our neighbors to focus on the assets of
our community and provide necessary support through our center's
programs. By offering access to essential resources and services and
building upon the knowledge and skills residents already possess or
aspire to attain, we are building a healthier, safer place to
live--together.
Though we are a faith-based organization, we are committed to providing
services to everyone who walks through our doors, regardless of what
they believe or where they have been--hope and wholeness are for
everyone.
For a membership fee of just $5 per year, community members can access
an array of comprehensive programs that lead to self-sufficiency,
transformation and improved quality of life.
Programs:
After-School Programs

Giving young people a safe place to socialize and reenergize after a
long day has been a component of Bresee’s services since its inception.
As we build relationships with kids in this environment, they are more
open to the transformative, innovative learning experiences and
skill-building opportunities we offer daily after school. In fact, our
youth are often times the driving force behind the production of more
programs that build their assets, deter delinquent behavior, and
instill hope for a successful future beyond poverty’s grasp.
Young people benefit from assistance provided daily after-school from 3-7 p.m. in the following areas:
· Academics and College Prep (tutoring, homework assistance, college preparation workshops & tours)
· Technology Access and Training (self-paced tutorials, workshops,
open access in CyberHood youth lab, and multimedia training)
· Career Development (workplace-readiness training, internships, job placement and financial literacy)
· Health Clinic and Services (pediatric clinic, health workshops)
· Counseling and Intervention Services (anger management workshops,
peer counseling, first-time offender community service opportunities,
parenting classes)
· Sports and Recreation (fun activities and field trips, and sports leagues)
· Leadership Development (leadership activities and opportunities)
· Spiritual Development (Life, CoffeeHouse, covenant groups)

Our History
The Bresee Foundation is named after Dr. Phineas Franklin Bresee, a
Methodist minister who founded the Church of the Nazarene in Los
Angeles in 1895. Dr. Bresee believed that faith was demonstrated and
transformation achieved through serving others. He established homes
for single expectant mothers, provided food for the hungry and
developed a number of other compassionate, cross-cultural ministries.
To honor Bresee's example and carry out his mission, Reverend Ron
Benefiel and members of the Los Angeles First Church of the Nazarene
established the Bresee Foundation, a faith-based 501(c)3 corporation,
in 1982.
Bresee Staff
Bresee employs a staff comprised of energetic, highly skilled
individuals with a passion for our community. Building strong,
supportive relationships is key to our ministry. Going beyond their
job descriptions, staff members coach teams, visit ailing clients in
the hospital, act as court advocates, and help students enroll in
college. They organize donations for families in need, and sit through
long graduation ceremonies. Through all the challenges and triumphs of
life, Bresee Community Center members can count on our compassionate
staff to share the journey.
Program staff are assigned to one of three teams, and are responsible for implementing our visions in the following areas:
· Education & Career Development programs provide youth with
academic tutoring and homework assistance, job development and college
prep services during after-school hours. Both youth and adults are
offered computer access and training as well as arts and multimedia
production workshops in our 14-station CyberCafé open access lab and
28-station CyberHood computer training center.
· Family Support Services address healthcare needs through an
on-site, licensed community clinic, education and prevention workshops,
outreach activities, and dental care services. Comprehensive case
management services are provided in the areas of family
self-sufficiency, parenting and juvenile justice.
· Leadership & Social Development programs offer youth (ages
11-21) safe and healthy after-school opportunities including leadership
training, and fun, social activities offered in our on-site recreation
center. Summer camps, local field trips, and organized sports leagues
give youth opportunity to build healthy relationships with peers who
live outside their neighborhood.
· Administrative staff members are responsible for managing fiscal
operations with integrity, maintaining our facilities, managing human
resources, fundraising, and administrating our technology
infrastructure.
