Fifty-two hostages and police were killed on Sunday, October 31, when Al-Qaeda linked gunmen raided a church. Catholic experts on the Middle East fear that this bloodshed just shows that the fate of the minority Christian community will only worsen. Al-Quaeda group, Islamic State of Iraq, declared Christians as “legitimate targets” wherever they are. They ridiculed the pope and warned that Christians will be “extirpated and dispersed” from Iraq.
